In her interviews with random people on the street – which range from topics such as class structure in Sweden, to the Spanish civil war, to womens’ rights – she shows so much passion that it almost overshadows her love scenes with her paramour, Börje (Börje Ahlstedt). Lena Nyman shines in this film, as the 22 year old film student starring in a film, who’s in a relationship with her director outside of the film, and also as the young activist continually on protest within the film. It’s a strange and humorous experience, but an entirely unique one as well. Or, when Lena is having trouble perfecting a yoga pose, we return to behind the camera to watch the crew attempt the pose as well. For example, when one of the ‘actors’ fumbles a line, Vilgot as the director will call out the correct phrasing, then the crew will start the scene again and the film will continue as usual. Lena Nyman, our heroine, and Vilgot Sjöman, the director of the film, shout out at the viewers to buy the film and watch the second one, since it’s the only film ever made in two parts! I have to say that this was probably the perfect way to begin the film, because it sets the viewer up for the strange experiences that are to follow in terms of the film-within-a-film construction. The film begins by informing the viewers that this is a film of two parts – I Am Curious (Yellow) is followed up by I Am Curious (Blue), which was released in 1968 and was initially meant to be combined with this one to form a three and a half hour long masterpiece the combination of colours being representative of the Swedish flag. Nudity, explicit sex, and controversial politics kept this film from being shown in the US while its seizure by Customs was appealed. Meanwhile, the actors, director and crew are shown in a humorous parallel plot about the making of the film and their reactions to the story and each other. She experiments with relationships, political activism, and meditation. She collects information on everyone and everything, storing her findings in an enormous archive. Lena, aged twenty, wants to know all she can about life and reality. One of the most controversial and scandalous films of 1967, I Am Curious (Yellow) follows a multi-layered narrative, structured as a film within a film.
It was a great kick-off to this year’s kindness initiative. Just like watching that Oprah episode, witnessing that kind of energy made my heart swell (even more so when two of the students came over to give me a hug too!). Without giving away too much, he created a “tidal wave” with hundreds of students and a simple gesture. It was a much smaller crowd than Oprah’s audience, but impressive nonetheless.īrian Williams from Think Kindness gathered the students together to demonstrate the power of ONE and “paying it forward”. On September 26, 2016, seven years after Oprah’s flash mob, I was lucky enough to experience another one of those Utopian moments at an assembly at our children’s school. I swear my kids and I must have watched and danced along with that flash mob a hundred times. With tears in his eyes, he commented, “This must be what heaven feels like.” He said it felt like U topia, a perfect world where everyone worked together in beautiful harmony. One man commented that he had never ever felt that kind of energy, that kind of JOY before in his life. I quickly grabbed the remote and DVR’d the show.Īfter the flash mob, several audience members were interviewed about their experience. Balancing Brian on my hip and bouncing along to the music, I couldn’t believe what I was watching from my living room. When the cameras up above panned down on the scene, it literally looked like a wave. This continued until it reached ALL 20,000 audience members. Slowly, and with extreme precision, small clusters of people in the crowd began to join in the dancing. Oprah kept dancing and recording.Īnd, that’s when it happened. The rest of the people in the audience just stood there. It was an unusual scene – the only person dancing to the music, besides Oprah and the Black Eyed Peas – was ONE brightly dressed and overly-enthusiastic woman in the front row. When the Black Eyed Peas started singing “I Gotta Feeling,” Oprah, bouncing up and down, held out an iPhone and recorded the crowd. Unbeknownst to Oprah, the audience of 20,000 people had gathered hours before the live show to rehearse a carefully choreographed flash mob as a surprise to her. I invite you to subscribe as I’ll be adding more videos in the coming weeks. On September 10, 2009, The Oprah Show hosted the Black Eyed Peas to kick-off her talk show’s 24th season. Part One is below and you can check out Parts 2 & 3 on the Live Fix YouTube Channel. This interview was lots of fun and special thanks to my wife Colleen who became a videographer for the first time and did a great job! So I’ll give the BEPs another chance because I think it must’ve been so hard to wait your turn to dance during the Flash Mob and not be instantly under the influence of the individual. I’ve haven’t been crazy about “Boom Boom Pow” but I after talking with Jenny I have better idea of what the song “I’ve Gotta Feeling” can do to a live crowd. Giving the Black Eyed Peas Another ChanceĪfter the interview I gained a new perspective on the Black Eye Peas latest album THE E.N.D. The interview took place on the streets of Chicago so I hope you enjoy it as Jenny tells her Inside the Mob story. And I hope to do more video interviews with other fans and artists. This 3 Part video interview with Jenny is a first for Live Fix. Jenny did a great job of explaining how we as fans all have the power to spread joy during concerts via a contagious “ripple effect.” She also explained how she was inspired and what it felt like to be in the swarming the mob that looked more like a fantastic pulsing organism of communal celebration.Īnd though this Dance was expertly choreographed by the same team that did the T-Mobile Flash Mob, the footage of the Oprah Flash Mob still reminds me of watching the phenomenon of the Dancing Guy. Jenny has practiced various forms of dance for several years so she was kind enough to take some time to talk about her passion for dance and training for the Oprah Flash Mob Dance. That said, I had the chance to speak with my friend Jenny Schmidtz who was in the Flash Mob Dance for Oprah’s 24th season Kickoff Party in downtown Chicago. And usually mobs are angry and not this beautiful or inspiring to watch.īut this Flash Mob was swarming and surging for a different purpose. Like the rest of Chicago, I was amazed when I saw it (see above video). The collective ripple effect of thousands of “Joy Ambassadors” dancing in downtown Chicago during a Black Eyed Peas concert. What’s bigger than Chicago, bigger than the Black Eyed Peas and bigger than Oprah? |
